Director Baz Luhrmann has officially chosen the king for his upcoming Elvis Presley biopic. Reportedly Luhrmann was considering five young actors, but his final pick went to none that other Austin Butler.
“I knew I couldn’t make this film if the casting wasn’t absolutely right and we searched thoroughly for an actor with the ability to evoke the singular natural movement and vocal qualities of this peerless star, but also the inner vulnerability of the artist,” Luhrmann’s statement to Deadline.
The news broke through an Instagram post on Monday, with Luhrmann posting a side by side photo of both Elvis and Butler.
Butler‘s girlfriend, Vanessa Hudgens, posted about the big news on Instagram, expressing her love for him and how proud she is of his upcoming role.
The film will start shooting in Australia early next year; Austin will be acting alongside Tom Hanks who reportedly will be taking on the role of Elvis‘ controlling manager, Col.
