Alaa Abdel Fattah Released After 5 Years In Prison

Egyptian activist and blogger Alaa Abdel Fattah was released early Friday after serving five years of prison.

The discharged activist was arrested in 2013 for several offenses including: rallying, inciting violence, resisting authorities and violating the Anti-protest Law.

In 2014, he was sentenced to 15 years of prison time, but an appeals court reduced the sentence to five years in prison and five years’ probation in 2017.

His release, which was reported by pro-government and independent media outlets, was also celebrated by opposition figures and supporters on social media.
