Paris Saint-Germain superstar Neymar Jr. has, reportedly, contacted his former club FC Barcelona on numerous occasions and ‘begged’ to return to the Camp Nou, admitting that leaving was a ‘big error’.
The reports included that Neymar’s entourage met with Barca’s advisor and South American scout Andre Cury, who played a key role in bringing Neymar to Europe in the first place, helping him with his initial move to Spain from Santos. This meeting in Brazil is to be considered a second meeting after an earlier one in London with Neymar’s father back in November.
Neymar shocked the football world when he left Barca in 2017 to join PSG in a world-record move worth €222 million, with rumored suggestions that he wanted to move out of Lionel Messi’s shadow and pursue his Ballon d’Or dreams.
However, according to reports from his camp, the 26-year-old winger is said to be unhappy in the French league and wants to return to La Liga, despite his current success with PSG.
Meanwhile, despite Neymar’s slippery departure, Barcelona is said to be keen to take its ex-star back; in aims to beat their eternal rivals Real Madrid to his signature.
Neymar’s teammates from Barca showed interest in his return as Messi admitted that he “would love for him to come back”. However, Andres Iniesta, who spent 22 years with the club, does not expect Neymar to make such a quick return to Barcelona. “Personally, I see it difficult for him to return, but in football, I have seen a hundred thousand things.” he told RAC 1.
On the other hand, attacking midfielder Philippe Coutinho, Barcelona’s most expensive player, bought for a deal of around €142 million, is now reported for a possibility to be sacrificed paving the way for a sensational Neymar return. He has not fully settled in the club, scoring just 12 goals in 34 matches since his move from Liverpool in January 2018. Due to his mediocre performance, Barca’s manager Ernesto Valverde started with Coutinho on the bench in the last four La Liga games, which ups his possibility of being sold.
According to El Mundo, Neymar has personally contacted the Catalan giants five times about a return next season, with claims that the contact began from last season. These talks have now been conducted by the forward’s father, Neymar Sr.
After it has been claimed that Neymar Sr. has personally spoken to Barca president Josep Maria Bartomeu and other high-ranking officials at the club, and even that he has expressed how “disappointed and very sorry” the family are for having left the club, the father took action to end those rumors. He shared the following post on his Instagram account, labelling the circulated news as “fake”:
If the reports really are “fake news”, then Neymar appears destined to remain in France for the foreseeable future, especially since PSG has been insisting that Neymar is not for sale. He signed a five-year contract upon his arrival, with that deal set to take him through to 2022.
It’s important to mention that Barca have previously ruled out a return for the Brazilian but the club’s director of institutional relations, Guillermo Amor, said in November that “anything is possible.”
Neymar himself, otherwise, is yet to comment on the allegations, so no one knows his real intentions. He has only admitted that he misses his friends Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez. “I was at their training session,” the Brazilian said last year. “I spoke with them all. I had a good time. I miss them a lot.”
Regardless of the contradicting opinions, a potential return to Camp Nou for the Brazilian international player continues to be mooted in each passing transfer window. We can’t help but wonder will Neymar return? Share with us your hopes and expectations in the comments!
