Theoretical Physicist and Author Stephen Hawking Dies at The Age of 76

In the early hours of this Wednesday, Stephen Hawking passed away peacefully in his home in Cambridge at the age of 76 according to a family statement.

“We are deeply saddened that our beloved father passed away today,” his children Lucy, Robert, and Tim said in a statement.

“He was a great scientist and an extraordinary man whose work and legacy will live on for many years,” his children continued. “His courage and persistence with his brilliance and humour inspired people across the world. He once said, ‘It would not be much of a universe if it wasn’t home to the people you love.’ We will miss him forever.”

Hawking who was left in a wheelchair and could only speak through voice synthesiser because of ALS dedicated his life to explaining some of the most complex questions. At the age of 21, doctors gave Hawking only a couple of years to live. Little did they know that less than half a century later, this man will be the most famous physicist, mathematician and author in the whole world.

Hawking’s life was made into a movie back in 2014, The Theory of Everything, starring Eddie Redmayne who won an Academy Award for Best Actor for this performance.

The scientist was also famous for his inspirational words that we believe are going to live for many years to come. Some of his most famous quotes were:

— “One, remember to look up at the stars and not down at your feet. Two, never give up work. Work gives you meaning and purpose and life is empty without it. Three, if you are lucky enough to find love, remember it is there and don’t throw it away.”

— “We are just an advanced breed of monkeys on a minor planet of a very average star. But we can understand the Universe. That makes us something very special.”

— “Quiet people have the loudest minds.”

— “Life would be tragic if it weren’t funny.”

— “Although I cannot move and I have to speak through a computer, in my mind I am free.”

— “We are in danger of destroying ourselves by our greed and stupidity. We cannot remain looking inwards at ourselves on a small and increasingly polluted and overcrowded planet.”

— “My goal is simple. It is a complete understanding of the universe, why it is as it is and why it exists at all.”

Rest in peace bright star.
