If you are not anxious, caffeinated or staying up on Netflix all night yet you still don’t have a good night’s sleep, then this article is for you as we gathered four of the common reasons why you wake up tired:
1- Frequent visits to the bathroom
Those irritating messages between brain and bladder that indicate you need to use the bathroom can wake you up even if you won’t go to the toilet. They end up disturbing your sleep leading you to wake up tired. In order to fix this, try not to drink liquids at least three hours before your bedtime and make sure to go to the bathroom before you sleep.
2- Clenching your teeth
Do you unconsciously clench or grind your teeth or jaws and only realise when they start hurting? do you wake up with inexplicable neck pain? Then you might be suffering from a condition called Bruxism where you clench your teeth while sleeping. This can cause trouble sleeping and you should pay your dentist a visit.
3- Circadian Rhythm/ Messed up sleeping pattern
If you feel grumpy all the time or are always tired and sleepy, then your circadian rhythm may be out of synch. This biological process helps your body know when it is daytime and when it is night. Irregular sleeping patterns, computers in bed and night shifts work make your body unable to distinguish between daytime and night.
4- Restless Leg Syndrome/Periodic Limb Movement Disorder
If you keep moving all night in bed or wake up tangled in your blankets then you may be having Restless Leg Syndrome or periodic limb movement disorder. Although doctors do not know what causes them or the effects on your quality of sleep, it is still important to visit your doctor for a check-up and tell him about potential underlying conditions like diabetes, thyroid conditions, anaemia, and arthritis while also discussing any medications or supplements you are taking.
