Time Magazine just announced that “the Silence Breakers” are their Person of the Year, and what a well-deserved title to such men and women.
The Silence Breakers are actually the women behind the #MeToo movement, which has been going viral since the very beginning. It all started as a one courage act of a woman to open up about her personal experience with sexual harassment and assault, which encouraged millions of other women to break their silence. All the way from one story to a real movement, the spotlight was thrown to such a real issue. The hashtag went viral for several weeks with non-stop posts on all social media especially Twitter, which many female celebrities and models used to share their own stories too.
The movement is described as “fastest-moving social change we’ve seen in decades, and it began with individual acts of courage by women and some men too.” as said by Edwar Felsenthal, Time’s editor in chief.
Tarana Burke, the woman behind the #MeToo mantra, said: “I’ve been saying from the beginning that it’s not just a moment, it’s a movement,” It’s so true how strong the power of this movement is and how the hashtag went viral is a real proof.
The shared stories did not only accuse anonymous harassers, but also made their way to accuse public figures such as Harvey Weinstein, the movie producer, and Donald Trump, who was a runner-up to be chosen as Person of the Year and was also said to have harassed more than 10 women by unwanted touches during his presidential campaign.
Doesn’t it feel so good to realize how much power this movement has? It’s incredibly amazing to watch all these women break their silence and turn heads with their courageous acts.
Here’s to strong women, may we know them, may we be them, may we raise them!
