I am quite a procrastinator when it comes to studying for a subject I do not particularly enjoy. I keep postponing work and make excuses for myself like “after this movie ends” or “I’ll start fresh tomorrow morning” and yes, you guessed it! I rarely get around to finish what I was aiming for.
Over the past year, I have tried various techniques to help me start hitting those books when I do not feel like it. Some left me feeling bored out of my mind and others actually helped. Since school and college are around the corner, I thought I should share these tips with you.
- Stop what you are doing immediately Let’s say you are scrolling down Facebook when you should be studying for your upcoming Mechanics exam. Do not allow yourself to scroll for another 5 or 10 minutes because this will extend for hours. Instead, count backwards from 5 to 0 and instantly get up and head to a quiet place.
2. Ask a friend/family member to study with you
Calling some of your classmates can be a great idea to help you stay motivated, you can even form a study group and work together by asking each other questions or discussing parts of the syllabus that you do not understand.
You can also ask one of your family members to act as your “student” and you can be their “teacher”. As such you can explain stuff to them which -in turn- helps you memorize.
3. Play “study with me” videos
I have only tried this method a couple of times but it definitely works! If you type “study with me” on YouTube, you will find tons of videos of people who have recorded themselves studying. Some of these videos last for hours and some have background music! Put one of them on and you will immediately feel inspired. Grab your textbooks and follow along.
At the end of the day, you are the only one that can make yourself study. If you have the right willpower, then you will be able to do anything you want. The above examples are just there to give you an extra boost.
