Assassins Creed: 2016’s Biggest Flop

When you hear that there’s an Assassins Creed movie coming out and Ubisoft, the game’s mother company, is working on it you’d have really high expectations for it but, unfortunately, Assassins Creed was one of the biggest flops this year. I’m a huge fan of the Assassins Creed franchise and I actually regret watching it.

The film talks about Callum Lynch who explores the memories of his ancestor Aguilar and gains the skills of a Master Assassin, he discovers he is a descendant of the secret Assassins society. Starring Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard and directed by Justin Kurzel. Assassins Creed reunited the three of them after their work on Macbeth (2015).

Despite all the action scenes, the fights and the ‘Leap of Faith’; the movie was actually quite boring. Marion Cotillard’s role wasn’t special and she could’ve been replaced by any other actress and it wouldn’t make a difference. There was a lot of showboating that wasn’t necessary to use.

The visual effects were very good especially that 80% of the movie was shot without the use of CGI and the actors did almost all of the fighting scenes themselves. Michael Fassbender and Ariane Labed quietly nailed their roles. Ubisoft should’ve sticked with one of the old stories instead of writing a new one for the film. But this doesn’t deny the fact that it’s one of this year’s biggest flops.

Indiewire said “Assassins Creed is the best videogame movie.” Which is true regarding the action scenes, fights and the enjoyable visual effects. But still I was really bored while watching the movie. The movie merely scored 36% on Metascore; an average score of all the critics review. I rate this movie 2/5 for making me this bored and disappointed.
